• Image of Spiral at 10,000'

Hawaii is a breathtaking place, beyond the hotels, bars and everything touristy you can find something else. Something spiritual.

I was on day 12 of my Hawaii expedition when I decided to take a drive to the top of Mauna Kea to gaze at the stars. I arrived an hour before sunset so that I could hike to the spot I wanted for the shot. Now when you think of Hawaii you might thing of warm beach sand and gorgeous warm ocean. However at 10,000' it's cold, very cold, a few days before it had even snowed at the peaks.

I layered up and went searching for my spot, the one thing is at that elevation it is hard to breath while hiking with a 45lbs back pack, so I took it slow. Once I found my spot I tucked myself behind a lava rock wall that someone had piled up, I was thankful because the wind was howling only adding to the cold temperatures.

I sat there for close to 3 hours a combination of waiting for the light to finally fade to full darkness and then taking the shot. It was one of the more mentally taxing moments in my expedition but well worth the view.
